Resolutions and Such!

Of course I can’t start the year without a post about my New Year’s Resolutions! At the beginning of every year we all hope for the new year to bring unexpected things…to inspire us, to surprise us, to be healthy and happy and full of new beginnings. That’s the way I see January 1…the first page of a new book. It’s not like I expect life to drastically change, nor do I think that I’ll actually keep most of my resolutions; it’s just nice to set standards and use the new year as a clean slate to start fresh. These resolutions are just a few of many, so here goes!

1. Stop people pleasing- I have been told by so many people that I’m a people pleaser. I just can’t say no to people even if I don’t really want to do something or go somewhere. Compromise is never a bad thing but always giving in because you can’t say no is not. This is definitely something that needs to go!

2. Be more organized- For those of you who’ve seen my room, you know that it looks like a literal warzone. It’s the kind of warzone where I can just about find anything because I know exactly what pile of junk it’s under (this is the excuse I tell my mom every time she insists I clean up) but it’s still unacceptable. It’s time to throw things out and clean things up…and make sure it stays that way!

3. Eat healthy- My diet since college ended has been absolutely awful. No fruit, minimal vegetables, mostly junk. I learned since college that I enjoy cooking, so I’m going to make it my mission to start cooking healthier meals, and start rationing my intake of cake (and similar deliciousness).

4. Start doing more of what I enjoy- I realized that there are so many things I like doing that I just don’t make time to do. Whether it’s for legitimate reasons or simply because I don’t want to get up and do them, it is just unacceptable. Life is only going to get busier, so I better make time for the fun things now before I have real reasons not to pursue them.

5. Try something new- Similar to the last one, I’m going to really try to find something I haven’t done and become a pro at it. Whether it’s using a sewing machine, or learning ballroom dancing, I’m going to pick up something new this year and make it part of my life.

These are just five of the many I wrote down yesterday during some New Year’s Day downtime. I think everyone should make a list, typed or handwritten, and keep it with them. It could be detailed or brief, bullets or paragraphs, but it should be something that you hold yourself accountable for. This year is going to be amazing, and I want to use the fresh start as an opportunity to work towards being the best version of myself!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! I can’t believe it’s already 2015! The past year literally FLEW by, and I’m still finding it hard to comprehend. 2014 was an amazing year, full of lots of change, lots of new experiences, and lots of happy memories. To commemorate one of the best (and most monumental) years of my life so far, I wanted to share some of my favorite things from the past year!

There were too many memories to choose from, but these are some of the best!

It was such a wonderful year, and I know that I have grown a lot over the last 12 months. Though I’m sad to see it end, and to now have to say “I graduated college last year” as opposed to “this year”, I am ridiculously excited about what this year has to offer. Here’s a toast to the end of a beautiful year, and the start of a new one!

Happy Holidays!

The week is finally here! We are 3 days away from Christmas and about a week away from the end of yet another year. I can’t believe it’s flown by so fast! With all the festivities in full swing, I will be taking a teeny break from the blog to fully enjoy my time at home with family and friends. The next two weeks will definitely be filled with food, binge watching Christmas movies, food, shopping, food, lots of blog planning…and food. Needless to say my first New Year’s resolution will be to burn off the 60 lbs I’ll gain in the next 14 days.

I hope you all have a relaxing, fun and overall wonderful holiday! This is one of my favorite times of the year and I honestly wish all of you the most joy, peace and love in the world!

P.S. If you’d like a window into my time off, I will most likely be blowing up Instagram…definitely stay in touch!

Santa hat Cupcakes!

These cupcakes are my favorite treat to make every December. They’re so easy and they add a little cheer to any table! If you’re trying to decide what dessert to bring to your holiday gathering, I would definitely give these a shot!

What you’ll need:

-Any box of cake mix (I don’t make them from scratch but I’m sure you can!)
-A pint of strawberries
-Vanilla frosting
Optional: Red and green sprinkles

Bake your cupcakes according to the directions on the box. I made vanilla cupcakes but you can make any kind! Take them out and allow them to cool completely. I know it’s hard to resist icing them, but if you don’t wait the icing melts and it’s not easy to get good coverage.

Once they cool, ice them with vanilla icing and sprinkle some sprinkles on top. I use sugar crystal sprinkles to give a snowy effect.

Take your strawberries one at a time and dip both ends in vanilla icing. Place each strawberry on a cupcake at a slight angle to look like a santa hat.

If you want more sprinkles, feel free…you can never have enough!

Deck the Halls!

The countdown is now in the single digits! With 8 days to Christmas, I find myself getting more and more excited! I decorated my apartment a little too early (aka pre-Thanksgiving) but now I feel like it’s completely justified to be this festive! If you still haven’t picked up all your holiday home decor, I definitely suggest checking out Joann Fabrics, Christmas Tree Shops, and five below! I bought all of my decor from there and I absolutely love all of it!

If you want an easy decorating idea, throw some ornaments into a vase or basket! It’ll help you show off the ornaments that didn’t quite make it to your tree, and add little pops of color around your home!

Another quick way to add some holiday cheer to your home is switching out your summery fake flowers for something a little more festive!

I think my favorite part of all of the decorations was my tree. I grew up with a tree that was part of the family way before I was, and to buy my own tree for the first time was pretty magical. I love that I found ornaments that were PERFECT for me and wrapped all my presents earlier than ever before, and the entire thing just makes me so happy to look at when I’m home.

I hope you enjoy decking and trimming your halls!

(P.S. This was post #100!!!!)

Fall Layers

The weather outside has been prettttyyy frightful (see what I did there?), and even though we’ve had some bitter cold days, we’ve also had some pretty days that remind us of the warm summer we’ve left behind. For those days, I love to layer just enough that I don’t absolutely need a jacket; there is just something so refreshing about leaving the house without a jacket. As fall slowly comes to a close, I want to squeeze out as many fall outfits as I can! Here’s one of my favorites:

IMG_20141205_160319702edWhen I layer in the fall/winter, I always try to wear a top that gives me room to wear something underneath. This flowy blouse needs to be worn with a tank top anyway, so it’s usually my go-to (it’s always my favorite shirt so there’s that). Boyfriend cardigans are my favorite during this time of year because they’re so cozy and look great with leggings and jeans. I decided to transform my navy blue scarf into an infinity scarf by tucking the fringe ends into the loop. There are just some days you want that infinity loop, and luckily it’s not a hard look to mimic!

My handbag needs a paragraph of its own. I had been looking for a new bag for months and I was so picky that I never found anything I absolutely loved. This Black Friday, I made it my mission to finally pick something no matter how long it took. Luckily, this gem was waiting for me! This purse is literally perfect; it has multiple compartments, two ways to carry it, and I love the gold finishes with the black leather. I have been carrying it around like a prize since I bought it, and I know it’s definitely my new favorite bag.

Hope you are all staying warm!

Peppermint Hot Chocolate

These bitter cold evenings call for fleece, binge watching Netflix and some yummy hot chocolate. When I’m looking for something quick and easy I use the Swiss Miss packets; they are perfect for a quick cup of cocoa on cozy nights. If you want to add a little peppermint pizzazz to your hot chocolate and make your evening a little more festive, just follow these simple steps!

I love making hot chocolate on the stove, but you can feel free to microwave it directly in your mug!
For stovetop prep:

1. In a medium saucepan, measure out a cup of water using the mug you’ll be drinking from. Add a little splash more to account for some of the water boiling off.
2. Once the water starts bubbling, add the contents of your hot chocolate packet.
3. Stir the mixture, and make sure all of the powder dissolves in the water.
4. Measure out one shot of Peppermint Schnapps.
5. Remove the pan from the stove and add the Schnapps.
6. Stir and then pour into your mug.
7. Top with whipped cream and crumbled chocolate chips.

(mug is from Burlington Coat Factory)
Stay warm and enjoy!
